Thread: Transportation tank design!

  1. Exclamation Transportation tank design!

I ve been asked to design a cargo tank of capacity 16 cubic meter. in ASME Sec. XII modal app. 1, table 1-1.4M, min. thickness to be used is given. But i m confused how to select appropriate thickness? what is l/cm? Also what type of heads are to be used for rectangular tank with round corners, where mandatory app. VIII is applicable.

Any further guidance regarding design of transportation vessels as per applicable code.

    raja687,

Is your tank under pressure service or not?
-If it is, then the shell thickness is calculated by the formula in ASME.
-If it is not, you may use other codes, i.e. DOT or API. Roark & Young's stress and strain formulas may be applied.

    azhar,

    (1) why use a rectangular cross section? Cylindrical would be better to contain pressure. If you're trying to design an ISO tank (i.e. for containerised marine transport), it's simply mounting a horizontal cylinder into a container-size frame.
    (2) referring to above, you can then use ellipsoidal heads. i've also seen ISO tankers with concave heads.
