Thread: UL-142 Horizontal Tank

    Post UL-142 Horizontal Tank

I recently UT inspected a 10 year old UL-142 Horizontal tank, diesel service, now Im looking for a way to calculate a minimum thickness, after some research I came up with a minimum thickness to be equal to the minimum thickness for overstand only the weight of the tank itself, because the diesel only means a 2.4 psi of pressure.

Anyone Have any idea of how to calculate the minium thickness of ahorizontal tank?

Any suggestion will be welcome, and thanks in advantage.

Finally I came with the solution for my problem, in the SP-001 document (from the steel tank institute) they came with this argument for declaring a tank good for service:

if the minimum remaining wall thickness is more than 75%, then re-inspect in 10 yrs
if the minimum remaining wall thickness is more than 50 but less than 75, re inspect in 5 years and locate corrosion origin and eliminate it.
if the minimum remaining wall thickness is more than 25 % but less than 50 % take tank out of service, repair/renew tank as needed...
