Thread: Power system simulation setup

    Power system simulation setup

    Dear all experts.
Having two machines running in :
    M1 - iso - volt
    M2 - droop - PF

And most software do not have this specific mode except PV,PQ and slack,
How can I setup the machines operating mode in the software to resemble actual running configuration especially with SKM ?

If you are in ISO mode - it means you are the slack.

Others will be droop. And in actual set-up, droop as selector choice like - MVAr control, V control and pf control. For PF control, I think you have to use the PQ by setting the desired pf by adjust the PQ of the generator.

Although pf control has to be a range of pf values. Maybe SKM dont have that. The nearest will be PQ. But in return, the slack will vary and adapt to power requirements.

Setting it to PV, it will be MVAR control. You will see it will ask for a MVAr range.

Only Etap have the specific mode but not with SKM.
They only have PV,PQ and slack.
I will try for a simple network and see how the respond of each.
By the way when we set to PV, it will ask for Q min and max range. What will be the value, is it 0 to max Var the machine can give?

you should refer to the PQ curve of the generator.

Ohhh..why I never think of that...

the governor of the generators are running in different states, please read the governor manual of "Governing fundamentals and power management - Woodward" or the etap load flow analysis slides. other is "Operating modes - Wartsila presentation"

    • Unit 1 it's parametriced on Isochronous mode. and is working on voltage control mode. regulating the frequency and excitation of the machine controls voltage drop.
    • Unit 2 it's on droop mode. this machine it's controlling power factor, controlling P and Q, this unit it's like automatic capacitor bank, its delivering reactive energy to have the PF at a desired point.

this is very well clarified on IEEE Std 3002.2-2018 | IEEE Recommended Practice for Conducting Load-Flow Studies and Analysis of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems
