Thread: PED and vacuum pressure vessel

  1. PED and vacuum pressure vessel

    Dear all,

We have made a vacuum vessel with the following characteristics:

    • Design pressure -0.7 bar(g)
    • Capacity is 12 cubic meters
    • Design temperature is 50 degrees celcius.

According to my knowledge and my interpretation, the PED directive is not applicable on this vessel. Other colleagues have a different opinion.

    Please comment. Thanks.

You are right. Requirements of PED directly applicable only for pressure vessels with PS > 0.7 bar gage internal pressure.
But very often PED requirements used and for external pressure as nonmandatory
Additionally Australian pressure vessel stds classified large vacuum pressure vessels as IV Hazard Category vessels. API 510 std for inservice inspection recommended to use the same requirements as for BPVC scope pressure vessels

    Review PED

[link Point to another website Only the registered members can access] Pressure vessels operating under vacuum solely, i.e. no internal pressure greater than 0.5 bar(g), are not in the scope of the PED.

But if it is applied MPS(Main Primary System) of nuclear project in EU like a ITER project that is called ESPN order(Franch regulation), their vacuum vessel may be defined modules caused activity concentration of vessel contents.

And new PED regulation will be enforced next year (specailly difference : seperated added modules and so on.).

red100rose; could you elaborate on those 'new PED regulations'? what is your source? and whats is new?

  13. Re: PED and vacuum pressure vessel

    Main modifications:
Module A: shall include risk analysis
Module A2 (replaces module A1):sampling procedure to be assessed
    Module C2 (replaces module C1)
    Module B: 2 types : 3.1 and 3.2

And you can find new regulation (2014/68/EU) as below website.
