Exclamation Flame proof Vs Explosion Proof

    Dear professionals,

What is the Difference between Flame proof and explosion proof...

is their any specific standards available for that,,>??

    pls up load the standards...

    thanks in advance

    Hi,

Flame proof and Explosion proof does mean the same in terms of type of protection (type 'e' also called as 'Increased Safety') used for electrical apparatus in the flammable atmosphere.

Flame proof Enclosure or Explosion Proof protection is where all components which could ignite the flammable mixture are enclosed inside the housing and an explosion inside will not propogate to the outside and is the best level of safety you could have for your equipment.

Some people or vendors differentiate to sell their product with different names where say a 'flame proof' is only to prevent the ignition sources from reaching outside but upon enclosure might not withstand the explosion effects and might be designed. . . but whereas this is not acceptable to the standards.

The basis of these requirements are Hazardous Area Classification and depends on the environment you are looking for . . . say gas or dust. IP 15, NFPA 500, IEC 60079, EN 1127 etc

    Regards

    Thanks all

  10. In Flameprrof(Ex-d) explosion is allowed inside, but the flame is not allowed to travel outside the enclosure. In Explosion prrof (Ex-e) no spark or explosion is allowed inside.
Other explosion proof variants like Ex-n, Ex-p, Ex-q etc.

The main diffrences is that Explosion proof apparatus are designed under American stantadards and flame proof apparatus are by IEC and european stantadards.
From the point of view of use, Explosion proof can be used in Clas 1 Div 1 zone (equivalent to Zone 0+Zone 1 for IEC), so the apparatus shall be tested more rigorously than flame proof.
Standards for Explosion proof: you can search for NFPA 70, article 500 to 505. For flame proof, IEC standards 60079

I hope this will be usefull for you

Re: Flame proof Vs Explosion Proof

Quote "In Explosion proof (Ex-e) no spark or explosion is allowed inside. Other explosion proof variants like Ex-n, Ex-p, Ex-q etc."

Above message about Explosion Proof is not correct. Ex e is "increased safety", Ex n is non incendive (or non sparking), Ex p and Ex q are also other types of protection methods. They are not revelant to explosionproof.

Explosion proof is normally used in North America (and some South America countries) whereas Flameproof is termed elsewhere. Flameproof uses the marking Ex d, explosionproof do not use term Ex d. They are under the same protection principle (which ignition is acceptable to occur inside the enclosure but will not propagate to outside through the gap. ) However the testing method (how many times for sample tests), the safety factor (1.5 for Ex d, 4 for explosionproof), and retrofit (field drill acceptable for Ex d, not allowable for explosion proof) requirements are different.
