Thread: WDI Welding_Pipe_per_Dia_Inch

  1. Question WDI Welding_Pipe_per_Dia_Inch

A few days ago, I was urged to calculate WDIs for a pipeline transfer and recieving pig station )...Among many other, I found myself an ignorant of such a term.

    A web search (

[link Point to another website Only the registered members can access]
I understand now, (I hope I do), that WDI is a useful factor when sizing and/or comparing pipelines jobs; however, it is still not clear to me the extent of its meaning... mainly when comparing different mixes of pipe sizes (as in the calculation I did).

Offcourse my Petroleum Community Friends must know the term, I said...so, I decided to open this post with some of the questions.

    How do you calculate it..?
How WDI factor is used for?
Is WDI useful for cost estimation?
Is WDI useful for princing a pipeline Job?
Is there any statistics thar can be used for estimation purposes?

Your comments are welcomed in advance

    Hi,

    (1) As per my experience, WDI is obtained by multiplying pipe diameter (inch) with numbers of weld joint.
    (2) WDI is used for estimate;
    - Man power needed
    - Work period
    - Work method
    - Material needed
    - And offcourse finally is cost
    (5) Sometimes the length of pipeline, material and geographic factor (site condition) is needed for estimation purpose.

Why geographic factor is needed? Because there are a lot of difference between laying pipeline in populated area and non-populated area, and it will implicated to the work method, work period and cost.
