  1. Need Help for Risk Analysis with DNV's Phast Risk Software

Please, anyone help me out with DNV's Phast Risk Software.

I need to carry out the risk analysis using DNV's Phast Risk Micro 6.54.
The materials to be considered are LIGHT DIESEL OIL (LDO) & HEAVY FUEL OIL (HFO). I seriously have no idea which material or material mixture to be used out of the material database given in the software.

I have been trying to solve this problem from past 3 days, but its was of no use.

    Please help me with this.

    Hi Sanjay

Apart from LPG and light cuts it seems that PHAST outputs are not as much sensitive to liquid hydrocarbons properties as one could think. So I would say that for mixture of C10+ the properties in the database are almost similar each other with small effects on the final results. So if your study require fire calcs then use the simplified approach of single component, e.g. using C12 which I think an average for common diesel fuel.
Also I suggest in this approach if you suspect to err then err on the safety side

    hope this helps

    Dear Sir

First of all I would like to thank you for your reply.

There is a problem even if I approach as you said. The software has the material upto C8 only, i.e. n-Octane.
In this case, please let me know if there is any other solution.

Will be waiting for your reply.
    Thank you

As said, I suggest if you know using C8 you introduce an error then be sure you're going to the safety side. If you are doing fire calcs check if the heating of combustion and flame temperature of C8 are close or greater to those of C12 then use C8. In the latter case the result will be overestimated but safe.

Alternatively, more precise if you could create your own custom material e.g. copying the C8 properties into a named "diesel" record and modify those physical parameters that most affect the fire results (u can use the PHAST tutorial or the yellow book as support to see what physical parameters are revevant in fire calcs)

    Thank you so much!

This might work, i have just tried it.
Wish newer version of the software would over come these kinda problems, after all such a big software, why cant it provide maximum number of materials?

Anyways, thank you for your help.
Hope I'm gonna present it well. []

    Dear sir

you can open the PHAST and click on open and select open Example after that you can select MC vessel example than you can see Deisel on tab of Material.

    Dear Sir

I need one more help from you.
I have understood & decided to go as you suggested. I would love to hear the broader explantion for selecting C8, so that i can justify myself to others. Please provide me all the possible details you know on this.

I have a presentation to deliver on coming Monday, and I'm sure this question will definitely arise as i came to know that even others in our organization experienced the same issue in tha past.

You been so helpful to me.
    Thank you
