    Basic Anchor force question

    Dear forumites,

    I'm new to this excellent forum and I have a very basic question about anchor forces imposed on an anchor which I hope you would be kind enough to answer.
    I know that if a pipeline segment is anchored at two ends, stresses would develop on the anchors. If the pipeline is unrestrained at both ends, there would be no stresses at the anchors, since there are no anchors, but what if I have a pipeline anchored at one end but unrestrained at the other end,

    1. would the end that is anchored be subject to forces/stresses?

    <Anchor forces??>------------------------------------------------------->free end

    2. If both ends are anchored the force due to say thermal expansion is calculated as A*E*strain. Would this force be fully on each anchor or would it be half of this force on each anchor? Similarly, if I have one end resr

    <Anchor F1?>--------------Force = say 1000KN------------------------<Anchor F2?>

    Thank you....

    I think I might have figured it out , I'm thinking the total expansion should be contained by both anchors so the forces should be split per anchor.
    I'll try and confirm this

    1) Case with one end fix (anchored) other end free................ Assuming that the pipe is supported properly and experiencing expansion in axial direction only. the Anchored point will experience a force equal to the sum of resistance friction force of remaining support. This force will cause equivalent stresses at the anchor.
    2) the Newton's law comes in to picture, unbalanced unidirectional force cannot be imagined in piping system. Two apposing anchors has to be equal and opposite and 1/2 magnitude.
